Installation

Verify the retention knob being installed is the correct retention knob for the machine. Although retention knobs look similar, they are not interchangeable. Installing the incorrect retention knob or the misuse of a retention knob may damage the spindle or tool holder and be a safety hazard. Once a determination has been made that the correct retention knob in being installed, log all the pertinent information on the retention knob inspection and installation log provided in this book. Before installing the retention knob, clean the spindle thoroughly utilizing a spindle taper wiper. If dirt or debris is in the spindle, the retention knob may not seat correctly. Mount the toolholder to the mounting fi xture. Thoroughly clean the internal threads of the toolholder. If dirt or debris is in the toolholder, the retention knob may not seat correctly. Apply a small amount of Loctite ® 242 ® thread locker to the internal threads of the toolholder. This will ensure that the reten tion knob can be removed with hand tools. Utilizing a calibrated torque wrench and retention knob socket, tighten the retention knob to within the torque range shown in the chart. The recommendations of the machine builder should always override the above torque guidelines. Overtightening can overly stress the retention knob leading to premature failure and can cause toolholder swelling and expansion.
